At Hewes House, we’re writers first.
We host a supportive writing community and offer a range of author services: writing coaching, manuscript editing, book design, and publishing support. If you’re serious about your work, we’re here to help you finish it.
I’ve been writing daily since I was 23 years old. I’ve published widely, completed many book-length projects, and I’m currently seeking a home for my second book.
I also spent a decade as a private tutor in New York, mostly working with students at competitive schools on the Upper East Side. I learned that the best teaching isn’t about imposing your way of doing things, but understanding how someone’s mind works and meeting them there.
That’s what we do at Hewes House. We help writers navigate the specific challenges their book presents. Many craft books and writing curricula can teach you to build a sturdy story, but making it compelling, even beautiful, requires someone who understands your specific project. That starts from the writing process and follows a project all the way through editing, design, and publicity.
Toni Morrison tells us: “If there’s a book you want to read but it hasn’t been written yet, you have to write it.” We’re here to help you do exactly that.
Hewes House is named after the Hewes Street stop on the
line in Williamsburg. In 2011, I moved to New York and ended up in an apartment building near that subway stop, next door to Ben Griffin, who became my co-founder. I was working at The Strand, he was at Vanessa’s Dumplings, and we spent most nights talking about books, technology, and what it would mean to build a meaningful artist community.
We founded Hewes House together in 2023. Today, I run the company with my family, but the original vision remains: a place for writers serious about their work.
